Why Albuquerque, New Mexico?

Why not Albuquerque? Bugs Bunny was always heading here for a reason! Maybe he was on his way to Balloon Fiesta…

Anyways, Albuquerque’s unique geographic and meteorological conditions make it an ideal location for hosting Balloon Fiesta. The city sits at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, offering cool and crisp mornings with relatively calm winds. Additionally, there’s the “Albuquerque Box” phenomenon, wherein winds at different altitudes blow in opposite directions. This provides a safe and predictable flying pattern for hot air balloons. Therefore, these factors make Albuquerque the perfect place for hot air ballooning because it ensures a thrilling yet safe experience for participants and spectators alike.

History & Growth of the Event

The International Balloon Fiesta traces its roots back to 1972 when a small gathering of 13 hot air balloons took flight in the Albuquerque area. The mesmerizing display caught the attention of locals and visitors alike, leading to the formal launch of the Balloon Fiesta just one year later in 1973. Since then, the event has grown exponentially, becoming the largest hot air balloon festival globally and drawing participants from over 20 countries.

Festival Dates & Duration

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta usually takes place in early October and spans over nine days. The festival kicks off with the awe-inspiring Mass Ascension, where hundreds of hot air balloons take flight simultaneously, painting the sky with an array of colors and shapes. There are also evening balloon glows, fireworks displays, and even a laser light show that illuminates the night sky, adding to the overall enchantment of the event.

Duration of Visit

You only really need one full day at Balloon Fiesta, but this is a once in a lifetime experience for many so I recommend staying at least a few days. This way, you’ll have extra time in case there are weather issues and the balloons don’t fly one morning, and you’ll also have time to explore Albuquerque’s other attractions. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to witness multiple mass ascensions, enjoy various activities, and explore the city’s surroundings.

Ticket Costs and Online Booking

The ticket costs for the Balloon Fiesta vary based on the type of admission and the date of purchase. General admission tickets are usually available for single-day or multi-day access, allowing visitors to enjoy the festival’s festivities. Prices may range from $10 to $20 per day for adults, with discounted rates for children and seniors. Tickets can be purchased online in advance, simplifying the entry process and ensuring a seamless experience during the festival.

There is typically a parking fee as well for each session. Prepare for another $20 fee each time you park.

Booking a Hot Air Balloon Ride

If you wish to take your Balloon Fiesta experience to new heights and book a hot air balloon ride, there are several reputable companies offering this thrilling adventure in Albuquerque, but Rainbow Riders is the only company offering rides during mass ascension. It is recommended to book your ride well in advance, preferably several months ahead of the event because slots fill up very quickly due to such high demand.

Are Hot Air Balloons Safe?

Decades of data show that hot air balloons are actually one of the safest forms of air travel. According to the FAA’s Aviation Accident Database, hot air ballooning is the safest form of all air travel and is rarely involved in aviation crashes.

As you should for every trip, I still recommend purchasing travel insurance. You can get a customized plan at the most affordable rate from my favorite provider, Visitors Coverage.

Weather Cancellations

Hot air balloon flights are highly weather-dependent. In the event of unfavorable weather conditions such as high winds or rain, the balloon rides may be canceled for safety reasons. While this can be disappointing, the safety of passengers is the top priority. You will get a full refund in case of cancellations. If your ride was supposed to be during mass ascension, it will be very difficult to reschedule since all the following rides will be fully booked.

Additional Tips for First Timers

For those attending the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for the first time, here are some extra tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Dress in Layers: Mornings can be chilly, so dress warmly. As the day goes on, you may want to shed some layers as it gets warmer.
  • Arrive Early: To secure a good viewing spot for the Mass Ascension or other events, plan to arrive at the festival grounds early in the morning. If you’re going up in a balloon, you’ll also have to arrive very early, around 4:30-5am.
  • Bring a Camera: The Balloon Fiesta provides endless photo opportunities. Capture the magical moments as the balloons float gracefully against the stunning New Mexico backdrop.
  • Stay Hydrated: The high elevation and sun exposure can be dehydrating. Carry a water bottle and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
  • Shop First, Think Later: There is new merchandise available each year for Balloon Fiesta, and the collectible pins are especially popular for those that visit every year. Some merchandise sells out pretty quickly, and the lines are very long throughout the day. If souvenirs are important to you, I recommend securing it early on the first or second day of the festival.
