A Guide To Visiting Crystal River
Why Visit Crystal River?
Less than 2 hours from both Orlando and Tampa, Crystal River is definitely worth visiting on your next trip to the Sunshine State. This small town boasts warm, spring-fed rivers and an abundance of both natural beauty and rich history. There is also no shortage of wildlife here. Crystal River is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise because you can spend your days exploring lakes, rivers, diving for scallops, fishing, hiking through untouched forests, and getting up close and personal with their most famous residents – the manatees!
Best Time to Visit Crystal River, Florida
As with most destinations down south, there is truly no bad time to visit. Coming from a born and raised Northeasterner, the weather down in Florida is pretty perfect all year round. You’ll just find different activities are available to you in different months.
For example, scalloping is best between the months of July and September with the Crystal River Scallop Festival taking place in July, but if you visit in March you’ll get to taste the best strawberries you’ve ever had during the Floral City Strawberry Festival.
October is the time to come if you’re interested in the Cooter Music Festival while November has both the Stone Crab Jam and the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival.
Best Time of Year to See Manatees in Crystal River
The manatees originally come from the Gulf of Mexico, but it gets too cold for them during the winter when the water drops below 68 degrees, so they migrate to Crystal River for its collection of natural hot springs that maintain a warmer temperature of 72 degrees even in the coldest months. Peak manatee season is November – April, but the population swells to it’s largest between December – February since these are the coldest months and the manatees require the most thermal refuge. The Florida Manatee Festival takes place every January, and it is not to be missed! There’s a reason they call Crystal River the Manatee Capital of the World.
Best Way to See Manatees in Crystal River
No where else in the world is home to this many manatees, so if it’s your dying wish to meet a manatee, then you’ve come to the right place. Crystal River is the only place on Earth where it’s legal to swim with these gentle giants. You can also view manatees up close while kayaking, paddle boarding or from land on wheelchair-accessible boardwalks at Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River and the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park in nearby Homosassa.
A quick Google search will provide with numerous options for swimming with the manatees. I enjoyed my tours with both Plantation Adventure Center and Fun2Dive.
Many of the tours have an in-water guide who will take photos of you either on their water camera or GoPro that you can purchase after the tour. Companies like Plantation will give you the photos on an adorable manatee flash drive, while others like Fun2Dive will text and email you a link to all your memories.
I also went paddle boarding with Manatee Paddle, and it was a beautiful way to spend the afternoon. A mom and baby manatee swam right underneath my board, and I got to passively observe them for a bit.
Please only passively observe manatees, even when in the water with them. This means no chasing, pursuing, disturbing, touching, feeding, etc. Sometimes the babies are curious and friendly and will touch you, but try not to engage.

Up front, there’s a 15,000 gallon tank where you can watch the mermaid show that occurs 3 times daily.
Places to Eat in Crystal River
Crystal River has some great local eats, so you can skip the fast food chains for a few days. Don’t let me catch you even looking at a McDonalds’s!
Some great breakfast spots are Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters, Breakfast Station, and The Biscuit Barn.
I had lunch at Waterfront Social, and I highly recommend the cheese curds.
I had dinner at KC Wine & Coffee Bar which is SUCH a vibe for a cool night out.
My favorite meal of the trip was probably at Kanes Cattle Co where I had a delicious salad, sweet potato, and steak. They also have yummy milkshakes and a chocolate cake the size of my head!
How Many Days Crystal River
Even though it’s a small town, Crystal River is one of those places where no amount of time ever feels like enough. The amount of time you spend here will depend on how many activities interest you. But keep in mind that even if the only activity you want to do is swim with the manatees, it’s a very weather dependent activity. If there was a big storm, then the water will be too murky to see much of anything, and if it’s too warm then there won’t be very many manatees, and they certainly won’t be congregated in the springs where the water is the clearest. That being said, I would allot at least two morning for swimming with the manatees, and you could easily stay for 3, 4, or 5 days and fill your time with all the activities previously mentioned.
