How many days in Sedona is Enough?
If you ask my Uncle, he’ll tell you the limit does not exist because just one quick visit to Sedona has him ready to pack up his life and move across the country to retire there.
Determining the ideal duration for your Sedona trip depends on your interests and how much you wish to explore. Even just a few hours in Sedona will leave you mesmerized, and you can undoubtedly squeeze a in a lot of the highlights in just 1 or 2 days, but I recommend dedicating a minimum of 3 days so you can truly immerse yourself in all the natural beauty and diverse activities the area offers. This duration strikes the perfect balance between exploration and relaxation, allowing you to really experience the essence of Sedona.
How to Get to Sedona
Sedona is approximately a 2-hour drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Renting a car is the most convenient way to get to Sedona, and the scenic route is part of the experience! Alternatively, shuttle services are available for those who prefer not to drive.
Additionally, you can fly to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG), which is about a 45-minute drive from Sedona, and rent a car from there.
Best Time of Year to Visit Sedona
The best time to visit Sedona largely depends on your preferences for weather and crowd levels. Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are generally considered the prime seasons to visit. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are adorned with vibrant colors, whether that be colorful blooms or fall foliage. This is the best time of year for outdoor activities.
Summer can be hot, but it offers the opportunity to enjoy swimming holes and water activities, such as in Oak Creek Canyon.
I visited Sedona in January, and I LOVED it. Winter brings a unique charm, with occasional snow dusting the red rocks, adding even more magic to an already ethereal place. I also loved the lack of crowds during this time of year. Just be careful hiking on the trails if there is heavy snowfall.

Suggested Sedona 3 Day Itinerary
The following 3 day Sedona itinerary is almost identical to how I spent my time in Sedona. Although none of the hikes are too challenging, this itinerary does revolve around lots of hiking. I will include a different itinerary below for those who aren’t interested in as much hiking.
Day 1
Morning: Arrival and Bell Rock Hike
Start your journey by arriving at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), the nearest major airport to Sedona. From here, rent a car or take a shuttle for the picturesque 2-hour drive to Sedona.
Upon arriving, begin your adventure with a morning hike at Bell Rock. The Bell Rock Trail is a moderate hike that offers stunning panoramic views of the red rock formations. Feel the energy of the land and breathe in the fresh desert air as you explore this iconic landmark.
Afternoon: 7 Sacred Pools Trail and Cathedral Rock Hike
After a well-deserved lunch break, head to the 7 Sacred Pools Trail, a gentle hike leading to natural water pools in a serene setting.
Cathedral Rock is another iconic Sedona hike, and I recommend coming here at sunset. The Cathedral Rock Trail is a challenging yet rewarding hike, providing breathtaking views from its summit.
Evening: Stargazing & UFO Tours
As the day winds down, prepare for an enchanting stargazing experience. Sedona’s dark skies are perfect for witnessing the celestial wonders above. Consider joining a stargazing tour or even a UFO tour, which will take you on an exploration of the night sky and the possibility of encountering unidentified aerial phenomena.
Day 2
Morning: Subway Cave via Boynton Canyon Trail
Kickstart your day with my personal favorite hike in Sedona and venture into the Subway Cave via the Boynton Canyon Trail. This unique trail leads you to a volcanic cave formed by ancient lava flow. Exploring this cave is an adventurous experience that takes you back in time to witness geological wonders. I recommend completing this hike in the morning because the cave isn’t very big, so you won’t want to share it with others.
Afternoon: Vortex Tour and Birthing Cave
After your exciting morning, take a moment to connect with Sedona’s spiritual energy on a vortex tour. These tours will guide you to the vortex sites, believed to be places of powerful energy that can promote healing and spiritual growth.
Following the tour, hike to the Birthing Cave, a sacred site with historical and spiritual significance. The hike is short but a bit steep, leading to a small cave that was once used by indigenous tribes for childbirth rituals.
Evening: Dining at Pisa Lisa
End your day with a delicious dinner at Pisa Lisa, a popular restaurant in Sedona known for its delectable wood-fired pizzas and Italian dishes. Enjoy a hearty meal in a charming setting, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
Day 3
Morning: Devil’s Bridge Hike
On your final day, embark on the Devil’s Bridge hike, one of the most famous and photogenic trails in Sedona. The hike offers an awe-inspiring view of the natural sandstone arch known as Devil’s Bridge. I recommend doing this hike as early as possible because it gets so crowded that big lines form to take the iconic photo on the bridge.
Afternoon: Off-Roading Adventure with Pink Jeep Tours
Kickstart your day with an off-roading adventure provided by Pink Jeep Tours. Hop aboard one of their iconic pink jeeps and set off on a thrilling ride through Sedona’s rugged terrain. Enjoy the adrenaline rush as your knowledgeable guide leads you to some of the region’s most awe-inspiring viewpoints.
Evening: Native American Dinner
For dinner, indulge in Native American cuisine and cultural performances at one of the restaurants that celebrate the region’s rich heritage.
After a day filled with exploration, it’s time to bid farewell to Sedona. If you have some extra time before your departure, consider visiting some of the local shops and galleries to pick up souvenirs or artwork to remember your trip by, such as at the beautiful Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village.
Alternative Things to do in Sedona
This itinerary is less focused on hiking, so keep reading if you’re interested in less strenuous activities and a more well-rounded trip with plenty of time for relaxation. Here are some other things to do in Sedona:

Stroll through the cobblestone streets adorned with art galleries, boutique shops, and restaurants. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the eateries with a view of Oak Creek flowing through the village.
Sunset at Airport Mesa – End your day with a mesmerizing sunset view at Airport Mesa, one of the famous vortex spots in Sedona. This viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire region, making it a favorite spot for both photographers and spiritual seekers.
Red Rock State Park – Venture to Red Rock State Park, a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy a morning hike on the various trails that wind through the park, offering diverse landscapes, birdwatching opportunities, and an opportunity to connect with the serene ambiance.
Chapel of the Holy Cross – Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross, an architectural marvel built into the red rocks. This spiritual sanctuary offers a profound sense of peace and reflection.
Slide Rock State Park – Relax and unwind at Slide Rock State Park. This natural waterslide formed by Oak Creek offers a refreshing and fun way to cool off in the Arizona heat. Spend your morning swimming and sliding amidst the red rocks and lush greenery.
Trolley Tour and Wine Tasting – In the afternoon, take a guided trolley tour to explore more of Sedona’s iconic landmarks, learn about its history, and gain insights from knowledgeable local guides. After the tour, head to one of the nearby wineries to savor the local wines and soak in the scenic vineyard views. This tour is highly reviewed.
Check out the McDonalds – Whether you decide to eat here or not is completely up to you, but you will notice that this particular McDonald’s is missing its iconic golden arches. Buildings in Sedona have to adhere to a strict color code which gives the city its aesthetic.
Explore more of Arizona – Arizona has SO much to offer, so consider visiting the Grand Canyon or head towards Page to see iconic sites like Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and even Monument Valley.
